  • NEWQUAY 24 | Joseph's Journey

Newquay 24 – The bike ride Come rain (lots of it!) or shine Joe just loves Cornwall. Surfing by day and music by night, over the years this has become a pilgrimage each August for Joe and his family and friends. Joe might not be able to make his journey this year but to keep this strong tradition going a group of us plan to cycle from Nottingham to Cornwall spending 24 hours in the saddle between 1st to 4th August. The route now planned, takes in Glastonbury and Boardmasters before arriving at his favourite surf beach at Treyarnon Bay at 1 pm on 4th August. We would love to have more people join us on the ride so are hoping some of you might feel inspired to plan a route from your home to Treyarnon Bay, join us from Nottingham, or join us for a bit at the beginning or the end of the route. Whatever you want to do would be wonderful. For those cycling from Nottingham, 459KM is not something to be taken lightly and initial training is proving quite challenging especially on the bottom!. Our hope is to raise some funds to support Joe in his recovery and to use Newquay 24 to encourage others to take on a task they too might find challenging in support of Joe’s Journey. About. Go to About The Route Updates THE CYCLE WILL START ON THE 1ST AUGUST AND FINISH ON 4TH AUGUST AT 1PM ON TREYARNON BAY, CORNWALL If you can’t be there, don’t worry! WATCH MY JOURNEY ABOUT JOSEPH's JOURNEY We are raising money to support Joseph with his treatment and recovery. In May 2020, Joseph was due to attend Buckingham Palace to receive his Gold Duke of Edinburgh Award. Until 1st March 2020 Joe's life was full of Club Hockey, County Cricket, A Level's, Surfing, Skiing. You name it he did it, with passion, energy, and a cheeky grin. On 1st March 2020, 18 years of energy and laughter came to an abrupt standstill when Joe was hit by a car and received a severe traumatic Brain Injury, from which he still hasn’t woken up. He has already successfully fought off COVID 19 and is responding to basic stimulus now he is at Leicester General Hospital but does remain in a coma. Download Lyrics THE LATEST UPDATE Dear all, Thank you so much, each and every one of you for your amazing support over the last few months. All of the messages and clips that people have sent in have been an incredible support for Sharon and Joe and in addition, through everyone’s generosity and time, we have raised an astonishing £30,724.75!! Joe is living in Adderley Green Care Home and due to the restrictions, he is still unable to receive any visitors. This has now been the situation for months, but Sharon and family continue to FaceTime daily to chat to Joe. Despite the reduced stimulation, Joe has made incredible progress, trying so hard to listen and communicate in the form of turning his lifting his head, blinking and moving his eyes and he does try to flash a smile! He really is an incredible man. We hope that as soon COVID allows, extra therapy can resume and that these little steps will lead to bigger steps over the coming months. GO JOE!! GO JOE!! is HOW all us non-NEWQUAY 24ERS can support this four-day fundraising event for Joseph's journey Beginning on 1st August (when Uncle Rich first places his foot on the pedal) and ending on 4th August at 1pm, (when Uncle Rich and the rest of the riders arrive triumphantly and a little sore at Treyarnon Bay), we are challenging all of Joseph's family, friends, and teammates to raise as much as possible in other ways. The race will be on to see how much we can add to the Go Fund me target of £20,000 in these 4 days and we will all cross the finish line together at 1 pm on 4th August. We want to create a hub of ideas on this page so please share what you plan to do with us as this may inspire others to do the same, or to join your event. • WORLD TOUR old | Joseph's Journey

GET INVOLVED Joseph's Journey Goes On Tour Hi Everyone, On the 23rd December Joseph turned 19, so the fund raising theme for 2021 will be 19…… As of the 23rd December we have all raised a mind blowing £30,724.75. We are totally humbled by everyone’s contributions of time, support and love for Sharon and Joe. Joseph is making small steps of progress and does try to smile at his Mum on their daily FaceTime calls. All of your messages and activity make such a difference to Joe as he is unable to see people in person, keeping in contact is even more of a challenge. Joseph’s dream following his A-Levels was to take a year off and travel, he had many places he wanted to visit – actually he has a huge list! As a team of Joe’s friends and family we are going to travel virtually around the world, taking in his favourite places. We will track our progress and follow our journey on a map of the world. Mileage can be achieved through, walking, running, cycling, horse riding, swimming, skate boarding…. Absolutely anything at all that doesn’t have a motor! We will update weekly on our progress and everyone will be able to update their personal mileage achievements. If we manage to get 25 people signed up and be part of the team, the goal would be an average of 19 miles per week for each person or team/family to get around the world before Joe reaches his 20th Birthday. On route we will celebrate our landmark goals with recipes and cocktails from the various countries and we can use this team event to share with Joe our clips and messages from our virtual travels. You will receive postcards along route 😊 There is no pressure to achieve 19 miles per week, we have picked 19 for Josephs 19th Birthday. This is purely a team event and all miles will add up. For the cyclists amongst the team, they hopefully will be able to achieve a few more than 19 and then the walkers can enjoy a more leisurely challenge! PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE SIGN UP. We are aiming to start on January 1st, 2021. We are just working through a few technicalities of how to run the challenge in the most effective way. Any ideas on this would be really welcome, the running of the website is quite a mission and if anyone techy would like to help us with updates, we would love the support. You could sign up as an individual or as a family or a team, whatever works for you. We are suggesting a donation of £19 to participate, however, this is only a suggestion as everyone has already been so generous with their time and contributions, the key to this challenge is just to join in! Our goal here is to raise awareness for Joe and to be able to share our adventures with him to help him feel connected to all his friends and supporters at this impossible time. Once we have plotted the exact route, we will email you the plan and let you know the best way to collate our mileage. Please email us or message via Facebook and we will sign you up! All the high fives, videos, messages and all the fund-raising activity in the summer was an incredible achievement and Sharon and Joseph absolutely loved following everyone’s activities. We really, really want to start 2021 with this challenge and we need as many friends as possible to come together to make this happen. Who knows, we might get around the world in 80 Days! Thank you so much for reading. Love and best wishes Aunt Sal, Auntie Kate, Sarah and the whole of the JJ Team. XX Here's the route!! GO JOE
