  • NEWQUAY 24 | Joseph's Journey

Newquay 24 – The bike ride Come rain (lots of it!) or shine Joe just loves Cornwall. Surfing by day and music by night, over the years this has become a pilgrimage each August for Joe and his family and friends. Joe might not be able to make his journey this year but to keep this strong tradition going a group of us plan to cycle from Nottingham to Cornwall spending 24 hours in the saddle between 1st to 4th August. The route now planned, takes in Glastonbury and Boardmasters before arriving at his favourite surf beach at Treyarnon Bay at 1 pm on 4th August. We would love to have more people join us on the ride so are hoping some of you might feel inspired to plan a route from your home to Treyarnon Bay, join us from Nottingham, or join us for a bit at the beginning or the end of the route. Whatever you want to do would be wonderful. For those cycling from Nottingham, 459KM is not something to be taken lightly and initial training is proving quite challenging especially on the bottom!. Our hope is to raise some funds to support Joe in his recovery and to use Newquay 24 to encourage others to take on a task they too might find challenging in support of Joe’s Journey. About. Go to About The Route Updates THE CYCLE WILL START ON THE 1ST AUGUST AND FINISH ON 4TH AUGUST AT 1PM ON TREYARNON BAY, CORNWALL If you can’t be there, don’t worry! GET INVOLVED Joseph's Journey Goes On Tour Hi Everyone, On the 23rd December Joseph turned 19, so the fund raising theme for 2021 will be 19…… As of the 23rd December we have all raised a mind blowing £30,724.75. We are totally humbled by everyone’s contributions of time, support and love for Sharon and Joe. Joseph is making small steps of progress and does try to smile at his Mum on their daily FaceTime calls. All of your messages and activity make such a difference to Joe as he is unable to see people in person, keeping in contact is even more of a challenge. Joseph’s dream following his A-Levels was to take a year off and travel, he had many places he wanted to visit – actually he has a huge list! As a team of Joe’s friends and family we are going to travel virtually around the world, taking in his favourite places. We will track our progress and follow our journey on a map of the world. Mileage can be achieved through, walking, running, cycling, horse riding, swimming, skate boarding…. Absolutely anything at all that doesn’t have a motor! We will update weekly on our progress and everyone will be able to update their personal mileage achievements. If we manage to get 25 people signed up and be part of the team, the goal would be an average of 19 miles per week for each person or team/family to get around the world before Joe reaches his 20th Birthday. On route we will celebrate our landmark goals with recipes and cocktails from the various countries and we can use this team event to share with Joe our clips and messages from our virtual travels. You will receive postcards along route 😊 There is no pressure to achieve 19 miles per week, we have picked 19 for Josephs 19th Birthday. This is purely a team event and all miles will add up. For the cyclists amongst the team, they hopefully will be able to achieve a few more than 19 and then the walkers can enjoy a more leisurely challenge! PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE SIGN UP. We are aiming to start on January 1st, 2021. We are just working through a few technicalities of how to run the challenge in the most effective way. Any ideas on this would be really welcome, the running of the website is quite a mission and if anyone techy would like to help us with updates, we would love the support. You could sign up as an individual or as a family or a team, whatever works for you. We are suggesting a donation of £19 to participate, however, this is only a suggestion as everyone has already been so generous with their time and contributions, the key to this challenge is just to join in! Our goal here is to raise awareness for Joe and to be able to share our adventures with him to help him feel connected to all his friends and supporters at this impossible time. Once we have plotted the exact route, we will email you the plan and let you know the best way to collate our mileage. Please email us or message via Facebook and we will sign you up! All the high fives, videos, messages and all the fund-raising activity in the summer was an incredible achievement and Sharon and Joseph absolutely loved following everyone’s activities. We really, really want to start 2021 with this challenge and we need as many friends as possible to come together to make this happen. Who knows, we might get around the world in 80 Days! Thank you so much for reading. Love and best wishes Aunt Sal, Auntie Kate, Sarah and the whole of the JJ Team. XX Here's the route!! GO JOE

  • ABOUT US OLD | Joseph's Journey

ABOUT US In May 2020 Joseph was due to attend Buckingham Palace to receive his Gold Duke of Edinburgh Award. Until 1st March 2020 Joe's life was full of Club Hockey, County Cricket, A Level's, Surfing, Skiing. You name it he did it, with passion, energy, and a cheeky grin. On 1st March 2020, 18 years of energy and laughter came to an abrupt standstill when Joe was hit by a car and received a Severe Traumatic Brain Injury, from which he still hasn’t woken up. Please follow this link to read more about TBI https://www.headway.org.uk/about-brain-injury/individuals/types-of-brain-injury/traumatic-brain-injury/ He has already successfully fought off COVID 19 and is responding to basic stimulus now he is at Leicester General Hospital but does remain in a coma. Joseph's Journey has been set up with 3 aims in mind. Firstly , we want to raise awareness of TBI and the devastating impact this can have. Secondly , by raising awareness we hope you will feel stirred to help us raise funds to help support Sharon and Joe with the path ahead. Nobody knows what the long term impact will be, but we do know that the journey could be long and costly. If our prayers are answered and the miracle of a full recovery happens, all money raised will be donated to charity. Thirdly to create a space to share things like stories, memories, photos, and fundraising achievements. This will be a place people can visit to get updates on Joe's progress, share their ideas, or just re-connect with the huge amount of love and support there is for Joe and Sharon. This resource will provide Sharon with a place to visit when she wants to play clips to Joe, show him photos and let herself be carried by those around her. If there is any way you think you can help or would like to get involved please don’t hesitate to contact Auntie Sal by completing the contact form. Thank you x Messages From Joseph's Mother Sharon and Updates Message from Sharon October 2021 Update October 2021 Joseph’s Journey – An Update. 03/10/2021 Dear all, at last we have an update for you – we are sorry it has been such a long time since we posted news on Joe's progress. Firstly, Joe moved to Steps Rehabilitation in July this year and during the last 8 weeks, Joe has received a more comprehensive rehabilitation and physio programme. Unsurprisingly, his favourite activity is therapy in the hydro pool! Joe is making some great progress; he is managing oral trials with stage 4 puréed food and a few sips of fluid. He also recently achieved a supported stand with one of the tremendous physio team. The visiting provision at the care unit is a huge improvement from the previous setting he was living in, and he can have frequent visits from his Mum and his family and friends are having the opportunity to spend time with him. Joe is LOVING the company of loved ones. We are delighted to share that Joe was best man at the marriage of his cousin Jake in August and attended the wedding with his family. The beautiful day was filled with smiles galore from everyone! Joe was on the dance floor in his wheelchair and enjoyed one dance with the bridesmaids. Last Friday, the home arranged for Joe and others to see the Para Ice Hockey at Sheffield Arena and of course, Joe wore his Nottingham Panthers kit with pride and a cheeky grin. Joe is working so hard in every aspect of his rehabilitation; he truly is an inspiration. He is working on his speech but currently communicating using an alphabet spelling board. Thanks to all the money raised by his wonderful supporters, we are investing money into technology to assist Joe with his communication and to enable him to be in contact more easily with the world around him. We are working with the medical professionals to make an informed decision on how best to invest the funds raised to support his recovery. We will keep you informed on any future investment we embark on. All the money raised will really help Joe receive additional support to assist him make the progress he is working so hard to achieve. Joe has asked us to say a personal thank you to everyone for all the support, from the bottom of his heart. We are planning our next fundraising for next year and would love everyone to be involved, we are hoping that Joe will be able to participate - after all, we know how much he loves a challenge! Keep following us for more updates, we promise to keep the updates coming more regularly ❤️ JJ’s Team xxx March 2021 Update March 2021 Thank you so much, each and every one of you for your amazing support over the last few months. All of the messages and clips that people have sent in have been an incredible support for Sharon and Joe and in addition, through everyone’s generosity and time, we have raised an astonishing amount of money, for the latest total and to donate please click here. As we reported in January, Joseph continues to emerge slowly from his stage two coma and is beginning to respond to simple commands and stimulation. It has been incredible to see him smile and hear him laughing. We are very excited to share with you that Sharon has been able to start visiting Joseph for one hour in person on a weekly basis. We are hoping to see this time increase as COVID restrictions are eased. As soon as COVID allows, Joseph will undertake assessments to evaluate the current position and plan for future bespoke therapy and treatments. We'd like to give a special shoutout to the ever-impressive Sophie and Henry who have once again taken on an unbelievable fundraising challenge. The incredible duo are taking part in the 3 peaks challenge in 24hrs on 22nd May! All of the Joseph's Journey team send their thanks and wish Sophie and Henry the best of luck! Check out their fundraiser page here. A positive update 31st Jan 2021 We write this week with some amazing news on Joe! He is really engaging with all of your messages and he has started to make some really meaningful steps in the recovery process. He has been following commands, for example, touching his left and his right ear when asked to do so, he is able to move both of his legs, he is answering yes and no through blinking and the most amazing step is that he has shown us his incredible sense of humour. His smiles this week have brought us all to tears! We are also very excited to report that Joseph has started to emerge slowly from his stage two coma, and is beginning to respond to simple commands and stimulation ❤️❤️❤️ High Five from Sharon 23rd December 2020 '' Dearest Joseph's Guardian Angels from near & far we would like to take the opportunity to sincerely wish you all a warm Happy Christmas & continued Hope & Dreams of Rainbow's for the New Year 2021. Sharon & Joe Xx Update 28th May 2020 Although Joseph has made incredible progress and is now able to breathe independently and appears to be responding to people's voices, sadly he still hasn't woken up yet. He remains in a Coma but is definitely making small but positive steps forward. Meet our lovely Joe 27th May 2020 How does one begin to encapsulate a dear Son, Grandson, Nephew, Cousin, Friend's 18 years of sparkling & vibrant life to date... Joseph's arrival into the world on a Sabbath day the 23/12/2001 was rather dramatic & eventful as the "Bonny & Bright" little man needed resuscitation, had a dislocated shoulder & was in intensive care for the first few days of his journey on Planet Earth at Christmas time. Joe in true fighting spirit quickly recovered & proceeded to grow into a fine fit large as life 18-year-old young man. Walking early at 10 months Joseph developed to have a no fear fun active attitude to enjoying & exploring the world around him and loving deeply & socializing along the way with his family & friends. Excelling & Sport devotee from a young age Joseph joined the local Tutbury Tiger Football Team at age 6 & claim to fame won the egg & spoon School Sports Day race (the only event the Teachers relented he could take part in this year) at age 7 due to his broken left arm from falling off the playground monkey bars! From swimming to Kwik & Hard Ball Cricket at local & District level to becoming an aspiring Bear Grylls joining the Tutbury Scout Group as a Beaver, Cub & Scout & completing his Bronze, Silver & Gold Duke of Edinburgh awards at The De Ferrers Academy & Sixth Form Joe also found time to join the 351 (Burton on Trent) RAF Air Cadets taking part in fundraising activities particularly the Poppy Appeal on Remembrance Sundays & enjoyed a flight to experience an RAF Fighter Jet refueling mid-air & a Lightning Twilight Night Run with helping & promoting the Air Cadets at Air Shows across the Country. Joseph's most treasured pastimes are gym, golf & enjoying surfing on family holidays in Cornwall & at Surf Snowdonia near Betws-y-coed in Wales & Skiing & Ice Skating with family/friends & on school trips. Joe's precious late Father played Ice Hockey with the Nottingham Panthers & clearly Joe had a passion for Hockey too as his most favorite sport is field Hockey with Barton Hockey Club nurtured from an early age at primary school & proudly progressing the ranks to play with the Men's First Team & freely giving his time to support weekly training sessions as a coach for the aspiring Barton Hockey juniors. Music has been compelling for Joe from first hearing the Stereophonics live in Mum's Tummy at 5 months old to learning to play the Drums & also the African Djembe. Joseph has been fortunate to travel & one of his most cherished countries due to a family connection is the Gambia. A few years ago he helped raise money for the families Gambian Pencil Project Faji-Kunda school a momentous & treasured moment being able to meet the beautiful children there. Joe's optimistic fun-loving resilient nature & kind compassion for others means his mantra is always to look up for the stars. We are praying for a miracle Joe will find the strength & determination to rest & repair his Traumatic Brain Injury & come back to us not believing our stories of when the world also just stopped to regenerate for a while & rainbows became the sign of hope. Much love & gratitude S xxx
