  • KATE's MAD Marathon!

So on the 4th January, Sally asked if I wanted to do the Athens Marathon with her to support Josephs Journey . Like any sane person every part of me shouted “What? Me? No way!!”, whilst secretly thinking I bet Joseph would give anything to be able to run a marathon. I spent the next two weeks dedicated to finding real reasons why I couldn’t do any sort of running- having a clicky knee and funny shaped feet featured highly in my list of genuine reasons never to run- ever. I booked myself in for an appointment with Andy Kett who is a physio and works with our local runners, just to give myself solid proof from a professional that my body wasn’t up to it. Sadly Andy found a solution for clicky knee and funny feet... So I searched for the couch to marathon app- but there isn’t one- and began my couch to 5k journey 5 weeks ago. So now my sights are set on completing the Athens Marathon in November ( or something similar if we don’t get in) I’ll post updates on here so you can have a giggle along with me at this ridiculous challenge. xx Kate (Joe's Aunty) ♡

  • October 2021 Update

Joseph’s Journey – An Update. 03/10/2021 Dear all, at last we have an update for you – we are sorry it has been such a long time since we posted news on Joe's progress. Firstly, Joe moved to Steps Rehabilitation in July this year and during the last 8 weeks, Joe has received a more comprehensive rehabilitation and physio programme. Unsurprisingly, his favourite activity is therapy in the hydro pool! Joe is making some great progress; he is managing oral trials with stage 4 puréed food and a few sips of fluid. He also recently achieved a supported stand with one of the tremendous physio team. The visiting provision at the care unit is a huge improvement from the previous setting he was living in, and he can have frequent visits from his Mum and his family and friends are having the opportunity to spend time with him. Joe is LOVING the company of loved ones. We are delighted to share that Joe was best man at the marriage of his cousin Jake in August and attended the wedding with his family. The beautiful day was filled with smiles galore from everyone! Joe was on the dance floor in his wheelchair and enjoyed one dance with the bridesmaids. Last Friday, the home arranged for Joe and others to see the Para Ice Hockey at Sheffield Arena and of course, Joe wore his Nottingham Panthers kit with pride and a cheeky grin. Joe is working so hard in every aspect of his rehabilitation; he truly is an inspiration. He is working on his speech but currently communicating using an alphabet spelling board. Thanks to all the money raised by his wonderful supporters, we are investing money into technology to assist Joe with his communication and to enable him to be in contact more easily with the world around him. We are working with the medical professionals to make an informed decision on how best to invest the funds raised to support his recovery. We will keep you informed on any future investment we embark on. All the money raised will really help Joe receive additional support to assist him make the progress he is working so hard to achieve. Joe has asked us to say a personal thank you to everyone for all the support, from the bottom of his heart. We are planning our next fundraising for next year and would love everyone to be involved, we are hoping that Joe will be able to participate - after all, we know how much he loves a challenge! Keep following us for more updates, we promise to keep the updates coming more regularly ❤️ JJ’s Team xxx

  • An UPDATE AND SPECIAL THANKS

Thank you so much, each and every one of you for your amazing support over the last few months. All of the messages and clips that people have sent in have been an incredible support for Sharon and Joe and in addition, through everyone’s generosity and time, we have raised an astonishing amount of money, for the latest total and to donate please click here. As we reported in January, Joseph continues to emerge slowly from his stage two coma and is beginning to respond to simple commands and stimulation. It has been incredible to see him smile and hear him laughing. We are very excited to share with you that Sharon has been able to start visiting Joseph for one hour in person on a weekly basis. We are hoping to see this time increase as COVID restrictions are eased. As soon as COVID allows, Joseph will undertake assessments to evaluate the current position and plan for future bespoke therapy and treatments. We'd like to give a special shoutout to the ever-impressive Sophie and Henry who have once again taken on an unbelievable fundraising challenge. The incredible duo are taking part in the 3 peaks challenge in 24hrs on 22nd May! All of the Joseph's Journey team send their thanks and wish Sophie and Henry the best of luck! Check out their fundraiser page here.

  • A positive update

We write this week with some amazing news on Joe! He is really engaging with all of your messages and he has started to make some really meaningful steps in the recovery process. He has been following commands, for example, touching his left and his right ear when asked to do so, he is able to move both of his legs, he is answering yes and no through blinking and the most amazing step is that he has shown us his incredible sense of humour. His smiles this week have brought us all to tears! We are also very excited to report that Joseph has started to emerge slowly from his stage two coma, and is beginning to respond to simple commands and stimulation ❤️❤️❤️

Dearest Everyone~We continue to be completely astounded and overcome by the extent & continued outpour of Love, Thoughts & Prayers from our precious family, friends & acquaintances taking the time in these unprecedented days to show & express care, consideration and generosity for Joseph. I have received so many personal messages & anecdotes to share with me memories of Joseph's loving kind & caring nature which have been deeply touching. The wonderful High Five facebook video clips have been truly inspirational & an enormous solace & comfort each & every day. Joseph unfortunately continues in the stage 2 coma & during the last month has been fighting to also overcome a number of set backs including sickness, pain, altered skeletal muscle performance and a suspected slow bleed re Joe's RIG/Intestinal resulting in a blood transfusion to currently having Aspirated Pneumonia along with the pressure of the further Covid19 lockdown in Leicester. We are so fortunate & privileged to have such outstandingly remarkable & kind hearted family & friends to advocate Joseph's Journey & enhance our continued prayers for more positive brighter recovery days soon. I so wish we could Thank each & everyone individually for the incredibly gracious & sensational support and along with my sincere gratitude expressed to our beautiful family & friends on the WhatsApp Family Group updates also special mention to Nick Steele, Lynne Smith, Will Webb, The Captain of HMS Mersey and everyone from the Tutbury Tigers Football Team & my HAH friends & colleagues for their commitment & exceptional fund raising ventures for Joseph. We wish Uncle Rich, Uncle Steve, Uncle John, Steve, Major & Papa Teather continued Good Luck!!! with the cycle training for the Newquay 24 Bike Ride and for all the awesome motivational commitments for our wonderful Joe. • Quick Update

Although Joseph has made incredible progress and is now able to breathe independently and appears to be responding to people's voices, sadly he still hasn't woken up yet. He remains in a Coma but is definitely making small but positive steps forward.

  • Meet Our Lovely Joe

How does one begin to encapsulate a dear Son, Grandson, Nephew, Cousin, Friend's 18 years of sparkling & vibrant life to date... Joseph's arrival into the world on a Sabbath day the 23/12/2001 was rather dramatic & eventful as the "Bonny & Bright" little man needed resuscitation, had a dislocated shoulder & was in intensive care for the first few days of his journey on Planet Earth at Christmas time. Joe in true fighting spirit quickly recovered & proceeded to grow into a fine fit large as life 18-year-old young man. Walking early at 10 months Joseph developed to have a no fear fun active attitude to enjoying & exploring the world around him and loving deeply & socializing along the way with his family & friends. Excelling & Sport devotee from a young age Joseph joined the local Tutbury Tiger Football Team at age 6 & claim to fame won the egg & spoon School Sports Day race (the only event the Teachers relented he could take part in this year) at age 7 due to his broken left arm from falling off the playground monkey bars! From swimming to Kwik & Hard Ball Cricket at local & District level to becoming an aspiring Bear Grylls joining the Tutbury Scout Group as a Beaver, Cub & Scout & completing his Bronze, Silver & Gold Duke of Edinburgh awards at The De Ferrers Academy & Sixth Form Joe also found time to join the 351 (Burton on Trent) RAF Air Cadets taking part in fundraising activities particularly the Poppy Appeal on Remembrance Sundays & enjoyed a flight to experience an RAF Fighter Jet refueling mid-air & a Lightning Twilight Night Run with helping & promoting the Air Cadets at Air Shows across the Country. Joseph's most treasured pastimes are gym, golf & enjoying surfing on family holidays in Cornwall & at Surf Snowdonia near Betws-y-coed in Wales & Skiing & Ice Skating with family/friends & on school trips. Joe's precious late Father played Ice Hockey with the Nottingham Panthers & clearly Joe had a passion for Hockey too as his most favorite sport is field Hockey with Barton Hockey Club nurtured from an early age at primary school & proudly progressing the ranks to play with the Men's First Team & freely giving his time to support weekly training sessions as a coach for the aspiring Barton Hockey juniors. Music has been compelling for Joe from first hearing the Stereophonics live in Mum's Tummy at 5 months old to learning to play the Drums & also the African Djembe. Joseph has been fortunate to travel & one of his most cherished countries due to a family connection is the Gambia. A few years ago he helped raise money for the families Gambian Pencil Project Faji-Kunda school a momentous & treasured moment being able to meet the beautiful children there. Joe's optimistic fun-loving resilient nature & kind compassion for others means his mantra is always to look up for the stars. We are praying for a miracle Joe will find the strength & determination to rest & repair his Traumatic Brain Injury & come back to us not believing our stories of when the world also just stopped to regenerate for a while & rainbows became the sign of hope. Much love & gratitude S xxx
